Recycling & Waste Management Leader -2018
In 2016 a small scale recycling system was started in the Perhentian Islands by asking the dive centres and resorts to put all recyclables into a colour bin bag. However the system was never restarted again after the monsoon due to lack of resources. This needs a strong persistence and support for the system to work. It can work, but only with a dedicated member of staff pushing it.
As part of a small team you are also expected to provide cover for your colleagues and as such should ensure you have a full understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
ν Meet with rubbish collection company. Ensure their staff still find the recyclable materials and sell on the mainland.
ν Buy suitable plastic bags
ν Visit resorts and dive centres who recycled in 2016 – support them and gather regular reports on quantities of recycled materials separated.
ν Provide relevant and accurate training for all.
ν Then expand to new resorts and dive centres once the current ones run smoothly
ν Create a monthly report
ν Create end of year report
Blue Temple House
ν You will be responsible for the up keep of Blue Temple House and do chores on a rota basis
ν Ensure the volunteers keep the accommodation and outside areas in a clean and tidy state.
ν Ensure bedding is changed on a weekly basis and that all new volunteers have clean bedding.
ν Be a team player
ν High level of water safety awareness.
ν Attention to detail when it comes to research training, data collection, data input and research monitoring.
ν Ensure a good level of communication between yourself, Project Leader and colleagues at all times.
ν Undertake and demonstrate consistent planning of your workload and adhere to set deadlines.
ν Meet regularly with the Project Leader as the timetable of the project allows.
ν Assist the Project Leader in completing Risk Assessments, Operating Procedures and programme content as required.
ν Complete reports as required.
ν Provide cover for colleague’s leave and illness as required.
ν Do as your Project Leader asks you.
ν Ensure good financial management by detailing proposed and actual expenditure and filing receipts.
ν Travel for the purposes of work following agreed timetabling and budgets.
ν Provide adequate notice of any travel needed whether work related or personal.
ν Must display a professional example to volunteers and colleagues at all times.
ν Must adhere to all safety measures, protocols and procedures as directed by Ecoteer.
ν Must notify Project Leader of issues that affect the completion of set tasks.
ν You are expected to carry out daily house chores with the other staff on a rota basis.
ν Take on tasks in addition to the descriptions above as delegated by the Project Leader that are deemed fair, achievable within the present task load and within the person’s capability.
ν Excellent communication skills and confident public speaker.
ν Excellent coral rehabilitation experience.
ν Good swimming ability and water safety awareness.
ν High level of organization and ability to meet deadlines.
ν Knowledge of the work of Ecoteer and marine conservation in Malaysia.
ν Teaching experience and good working and living with children.
ν Competent in using Microsoft Office.
ν A flexible and adaptive approach.
ν Must be comfortable in accessing assistance for a demanding role.
ν Free mixed dorm accommodation at the Blue Temple House or at Ecoteer House in the Perhentian Islands.
ν 1 day off per week and a block of 7 days off every 90 days during the project season (February to November)
ν All work related expenses (NOT TRAVEL TO OR FROM MALAYSIA)
ν Free Wifi internet
ν Written reference letter upon completion of internship (upon request only)
Start and End Dates
February 2018 til November 2018
We prefer longer durations and if you stay for the whole season, we can offer an allowance after probation period.
