Adventure in the jungle with the Termiar People

Take a step to the wild side and join us in the forests of Ipoh. You will live in the village of Kg Tonggang at our community centre and help with community efforts as well as jungle trekking with a purpose to evaluate the mammals living in the forest and also the level of poaching in the area. You will share your life with the local villagers whose ancestors once lived nomadic lifestyles in the rainforest.

Orang Asli (Directly translated means the ‘Original People’)
The villagers come from the Termiar people whose ancestors lived nomadic lifestyles in the forest and used cave drawings as a way to pass on knowledge. Some of the elder villagers lived part of their lifes as nomadic people in the forests and can teach us a thing or two about jungle living. You will live in the FE base camp and Community centre which was leased to us in March 2014, you will help us to renovate the centre to bring help this dream come true. The dream is for the open hall to become a hub of extra-curricular education and community spirit for the villagers. We host after weekly English lessons for the children at the bamboo hut that you can become a part of.

We also planned to position camera traps in the rainforest and you will help collect them during jungle treks into the forests. The treks have 2 main aims, one being to collect the camera traps to see what animals live in the forests and the other is to assess the level of wildlife poaching in the area. Malaysia is a hub for the illegal wildlife trade with animals being taken from the forests of Malaysia and also all around the world to markets in China and Europe.

Our project is unique in that you will get to understand the ‘real’ story behind what lives in the woods!

If you would like, we run climbs to the peak of Mount Korbu, at 2,120m it is the second highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia. The climb is medium/hard but very scenic as it is relatively low. We have had many volunteers doing this climb and to date none have failed. If you would like to combine your time at the village with a 5D4N climb of the mountain please get in touch as we have set start dates.

“This project will become the second Ecoteer House-type project and is being led by Pavin who worked with Ecoteer at the start of the Ecoteer House project, so he knows what it takes to make it right. The project for me is exciting as the villagers have asked us to help them and the local government have given us support by giving us a long-term lease on the buildings that we plan to convert into the base camp and community centre. The local community at this project were removed from their ancestral grounds and have lost a lot of the native bush skills they once had but on the other hand do not possess the skills of city dwelling folk so they are caught between a rock and a hard place 🙁 Which is why we see this project has a lot of potential. Not to mention the amazing jungles which are on the door step to the village. We have a wonderful team to host you.”

    5 Easy Steps to Book Your Jungle Adventure:
    1) Contact us here with your initial inquiry – tell us about yourself and the project you would like to join.
    2) You will receive an e-mail with more information and the application form to complete.
    3) On receipt of your application we will confirm your reservation and inform you how to make your deposit payment. Your reservation will be held for 2 weeks, after which it will be cancelled automatically if no deposit is received.
    4) Please allow a minimum of 3 weeks for us to process your application and payment.
    5) Full payment is required no later than 1 month before departure. You may pay online by credit card or a direct transfer to our account.

    It’s that Simple!! Once your deposit has been paid you will receive our Know Before You Go guide, which is packed full of useful information about your project and general tips to prepare you for volunteering.

    Cancellation Policy

    a. Cancellation of reservation must be made in writing to avoid any misunderstanding. If the company receives notice to cancel 30 days or more before the date of departure, a minimum administrative fee of RM100.00 or 10% of the tour deposit (whichever is lower) per person will be levied.

    b. If notice of the cancellation is received 29 days or less before the date of departure the following charges will apply:

    c. 15 – 29 working days before the date of departure = 50% of deposit
    8 – 14 working days before the date of departure = 20% of FULL COST
    3 – 7 working days before the date of departure = 40% of FULL COST
    2 working days or less before the date of departure = 100% of FULL COST

  • Jungle trekking
    You will go on daily trekking and come back to the base, if as a group you want to try camping in the jungle then we can organise for an overnight stay in the jungle. The walks can vary depending on what the project leader sets as the objectives. It could be to collect or set camera traps, it could be to venture into an area they haven’t been yet, or it could be to walk over a well trodden path to check for recent signs of human encroachments. If we find any signs of illegal human activities and poaching we will inform the local government agencies who will investigate further. Our project leader Nordy is full of knowledge about the rainforest.

    School Clubs
    You will first need to prepare for the school clubs so as a group you know what activities you are leading. These sessions are a great way to give back to the community and most importantly have fun whilst doing so. The kids are full of energy and really are the main attraction of this project.

    Community activities
    You will learn about the Orang Asli’s native skills, like blow pipe shooting and also how to make and set a traditional fish trap called a Bubu. You will share a couple of meals with the families each week to get to know them more intimately. Other activities are dependent on what needs doing but can range from painting the school to helping to organise activities at the community centre.

  • 1. What are the requirements to join this program?
    Volunteers can be any age but if they are without their parents they must be over 18 or over 16 with a parental consent form. You will need to have a positive attitude and be willing to carry out the tasks and facilitate the activities organized by FE Team. It is also important to respect the local culture and traditions whilst living in the Senoi village.

    2. How do I get to Ipoh from Kuala Lumpur?
    Take a train from KL sentral to Ipoh it takes around 2 hours to reach Ipoh
    Take a bus from Pudu station or from the airport – YoYo run buses from the airports to Ipoh
    3. What vaccinations do I need before joining the project?
    Hepatitis A; Hepatitis B; typhoid; measles, mumps, rubella (MMR); tetanus-diphtheria

    4. Any details on visas?
    Tourists from the following countries will receive a 90 day free tourist visa upon arrival:

    5. What is the minimum age to join?
    Any age with parents,16/17 years old with a parental consent form and 18 without a parental consent form.

    6. Is it possible to have our own room?
    Unfortunately we cannot provide volunteers with private rooms.

    7. Is this program suitable for families with young children?
    Families with young children can participate. They do not need to take part in any construction or heavy work but can still experience the life and culture of living in the village and experiencing the rainforest.

    8. Is there internet access?
    Unfortunately no.

    9. How long is the typical volunteer working day?
    The volunteering activities run from morning until evening with a lunch break in between. For volunteers staying longer than one week, Sundays are usually free days.
