TESTIMONIALS

COMING SOON!

Sitting on the beach at night, under a star lit sky, whilst protecting sea turtles. Snorkel in turquoise waters, take photos of sea turtles and other marine creatures. And take some well-deserved relaxing time on one of the most beautiful beaches of Malaysia after doing a beach clean-up. This is a unique opportunity to actually get close to Malaysians endangered sea turtles and join hands with a local research team.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival, Introduction to Green Turtles & Turtle Watch

After a lovely 30-45 minutes boat ride over blue waters, you will arrive at the beautiful Perhentian Islands in the morning. A short orientation and lunch will help you settle down. Our tour members will give you an introduction to Green Turtles which you’ll be working with these days. You’re not on an island to stay dry, so it’s time to discover the underwater world. The day is not over yet, because at night you’ll be going on Turtle Watch. Guarding turtle nesting beaches, star gazing and storytelling will make this trip one never to forget.

Day 2: Snorkel Tour, Free Time, Coral Reef Conservation Talk & Turtle Watch

Today you will hit the waters again. But before you’re about to witness the most amazing coral species, sharks and colourful fish, a Coral Reef Conservation Talk will help you understand our oceans better. During the snorkel tour, you will collect data by literally swimming with the turtles and snapping photos of them.  After a tasty lunch, you will conduct a beach clean-up to keep the turtles natural habitat clean. Take a rest when needed, because tonight you will go on another Turtle Watch.

Day 3: Debrief & Check Out

After two intense days full of activities and information it’s time to reminisce and take the 12am boat back to mainland.

Location

17km off the east coast of Malaysia lie the Perhentian Islands; made up of Perhentian Kecil and Perhentian Besar both boast beautiful white beaches and crystal clear waters. Once used as a stopping point for traders travelling between Malaysia and Bangkok (Perhentian means ‘stopping point’ in Malay) it now hosts tourists who come to relax, snorkel, and dive off the coral reefs surrounding the islands.

Since the Perhentian Turtle Project has been running we have…

Briefed 4726 people on eco-snorkelling practices

Spent 826 hours surveying sea turtles

Sighted 647 turtles

Identified 33 individual turtles (13% male | 53% female | 34% as yet unsexed)

Cleared 371 bags of rubbish from our beaches (over 1500kg!)

Looking to the Future

The Perhentian Turtle Project is constantly looking for ways to move forward; we and the Perhentian Marine Research Centre helped publish our first paper in 2017* and we’re looking to publish many more in the future.

*the paper is freely available to view at http://www.herpconbio.org/Volume_12/Issue_2/Long_Azmi_2017.pdf (we’re very proud so please check it out!)

PLEASE NOTE
If you would prefer less free time in your program, we are happy to share many of our mini projects with you. So if you want to be involved in these activities which are not included in your program, feel free to speak to us and we can allocate you a mini project for you to complete in your free time whilst at the project. Examples will be making and developing our handicraft products using waste found on the beach such as sea glass, help to improve our awareness campaign or conduct tourist questionnaire and talks at resorts around the islands.
