Poacher Surveillance Patrols – Titiwangsa Range

Help to fund poaching surveillance treks in Tropical Rainforests in Malaysia. The forests are thought to be home to wild populations of Asian Elephants, Malayan Tiger, Leopards, Golden cats, Sun bears and all sorts. By donating to this cause you are helping to protect these majestic creatures.

In 2015 we worked with two Orang Asli groups, The Batek in Merapoh and the Termiar at Ipoh. Both project sites are just 100km apart as the hornbill flies. The Rainforest between is home to hundreds of different species of animals and is an important link between Taman Negara and the Belum-Temengoor Rainforest. The animals in those two National Parks would use the rainforest between Merapoh and Ipoh to travel between the two parks.

Poaching
During our programmes in 2015 we have seen a significant presence of poachers, which is increasingly worrying. MYCAT and Perhilitan made a joint announcement in 2014 that the latest Malayan Tiger population is just 250-340 animals in the wild.

The Tigers and their friends are on the brink of extinction and need every little help they can get.

What we plan to do
The Orang Asli particularly the Batek are the guardian’s of the Rainforest. We want to employ two of the Batek and Termiar villagers each day to conduct poacher surveillance treks. The Orang Asli can go much further and faster without volunteers and city folk so they can cover much more ground. They will then report back to us and ultimately to the 24-hour MYCAT
Wildlife Crime Hotline, which channels information anonymously to the relevant authorities.

How we will use your donations
GBP25 will fund 1 days poaching surveillance walks by 2 orang asli. The Orang Asli receive a fee of Rm50 each per day plus petrol money so that means 100% of your donation will go to the Orang Asli, so not only will you be helping to reduce poaching in the rainforests of Malaysia but also directly employing the Orang Asli.

You will then receive a report every 6 months on the progress of our work.
